Reaction to The Game Awards 2024

Du Lam

It’s that time of year again: The Game Awards 2024!!!!! I had the honor of watching and reacting to it at Indie Game Dev Night in BrookLAN. BrookLAN is a really cool place for gamers to chill, connect with others, and play games! It’s filled with conversations and music (like the “Last Christmas” singing challenge I started lol). Other notable things during the BrookLAN stream meetup were a demonic Pac-Man from Shadow Labyrinth, Among Us in a murder mansion setting, aka Midnight Murder Club, and Solasta 2, but I digress. The content shown during the TGA pre-show was a blast!! They did not disappoint with the first trailer of Ninja Gaiden Remastered, and how awesome was it that the first award of the year went to Tekken 8

The main show began with a skit from Statler and Waldorf, a special thanks to the father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, and an appearance from Todd Howard, Troy Baker, and Harrison Ford!! I particularly appreciated seeing Amir Satvat, who helped game developers find new jobs amidst the recent layoffs and won the very first TGA Game Changer award as a result. This year had some amazing performers too! The musical section for Arcane came in for the triple emotional damage (Yes there will be a second Arcane blog series next November.) from all three performances. “Wasteland” by Royal & The Serpent, “Remember Me” by d4vd, and “The Line” by Twenty Øne Pilots were phenomenal, especially Tyler’s grave scream during "The Line". Then came Snoop Dogg’s explosive production with 2 songs from his new album, and in my opinion, they should invite him back for next year. The final breathtaking act for me was definitely the Game of the Year Ceremony, especially because they brought back the beloved “Flute Guy", Pedro Eustache! Now, let’s discuss the trailers and awards.

The first trailer and my second favorite showcased Ciri's glory as an impressive Witcher for The Witcher 4. It displayed her magical abilities and how much she had learned from the previous The Witcher games. My favorite trailer for this year was for Helldivers 2 Omens of Tyranny because, as a Helldivers player, it’s a dream come true to fight new enemies for Managed Democracy, and a lot of players feel the same way. In fact, over 100k players were on Helldivers 2 after The Game Awards! One final trailer of note was for Dispatch, with actors Aaron Paul, Laura Bailey, MoistCr1TiKaL, and Jacksepticeye playing heroes or villains. It has a little bit of Critical Role’s humor and antics if it was a modern hero setting.

In terms of awards, Helldivers 2 further proved its popularity by being named the best ongoing and multiplayer game, defeating Black Ops 6 and Space Marines 2 for the latter. In some unfortunate news for me, Usada Pekora didn’t win Content Creator of the Year, but seeing her reaction to her nomination during the live stream was wholesome. She was both super happy to hear her name mentioned and to hear CaseOh had won. Speaking of creators, I would like to nominate Dokibird to be the next host of TGA! Continuing on, the best adaptation award felt like a war between Arcane and Fallout, and Fallout took the victory in the end. Some of the Arcane fandom didn’t take the loss very well, and as an Arcane fan, I am a little sad. Finally, Game of the Year shockingly went to Astro Bot, which also won 3 other awards beforehand!

What I can say about TGA this year is that a lot of improvements were made with the award speech duration and less frequent use of commercials, as this improved the overall viewing experience. This closes the curtain on another awards show, and speaking of which, I have one to attend tomorrow called the Indie Game Awards! That's all for now!
