Reflections on Gaming in 2024

So, 2024 is coming to a close in a few weeks. We saw a lot of positives this year, such as the announcements for new upcoming releases like Ghost of Yōtei and Dynasty Warriors Origins. That’s on top of some of the video game adaptations that came out, such as season 2 of Arcane, the Fallout series, and the Knuckles series. But it has been a year of uncertainty due to the current layoffs, Concord being canceled, and the scrapping of Overwatch 2 PvE. Overall, with each passing year, the gaming industry gets either more chaotic, more stable, or neither/static.

Aside from the layoffs, major shake-ups took place. Ubisoft is in decline due to several reasons leading to them potentially being bought out by a different company, and recently they canceled their new FPS game, XDefiant. Rooster Teeth was shut down earlier this year due to a toxic work culture, inappropriate conduct allegations, and a few of the founders leaving, among a few things. Sony caused Helldivers 2 players to rebel and was forced to stop its PSN plans, which spawned from many countries being locked out of playing Helldivers 2 since a PSN account is mandatory for playing PlayStation games on PC. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League ended up outliving Concord. Pretty impressive. Most notably, multiple studios were shut down, including the devs behind Hi-Fi Rush, though they were acquired by the PUBG devs.

Although this year was already crazy enough with just the current climate of instability, there were some silver linings. There’s Marvel Rivals, which, based on its beta test and word of mouth, seems like a fantastic game. Additionally, the recent layoffs have been forecasted to slow down, with the situation improving somewhat thanks to Amir Satvat, Business Development Director at Tencent Games, whose efforts helped many people who were laid off to find new jobs.

Frankly, I don’t know how I can best describe the future of gaming next year. Maybe it turns out to be better or worse. Perhaps it’s a bit of both? Sure, we may see successful games, but there’s no doubt we’ll also see some flops. We might see even more layoffs in the gaming industry, which makes the future seem uncertain. But, regardless, even if gaming in 2025 turns out to be a mixed bag like it was this year, let’s keep an optimistic outlook and bear in mind that with every down there’s an up!
